"Beyond the Stethoscope: A Life-Career Balancing Act" was a sold-out event hosted by AMA Victoria and the Women in Medicine Committee for medical professionals juggling the demands of a thriving career with the joys and responsibilities of family life, and for those considering starting a family.
The event was hosted on November 20, 2023 at the The Lyceum Club Melbourne. On the evening, a panel discussion shared thought-provoking insights into how to balance your medical career with family life.

Outstanding trailblazers in medicine
Trailblazers A/Prof Magdalena Simonis AM, Dr Desiree Yap AM and Dr John Gorman were presented with prestigious AMA Awards on the night.
- A/Prof Magdalena Simonis AM – AMA President’s Award - Selected by AMA Federal President Professor Steve Robson – for outstanding contributions towards furthering the objectives of the AMA.
- Dr Desiree Yap AM: AMA Women’s Health Award – for major contributions to women’s health in Australia via organisations including the Victorian Medical Women's Society, the Australian Federation of Medical Women and Women's Health Victoria.
- Dr John Gorman: AMA’s Gold Medal – the highest honour the AMA can bestow – for pioneering work on the rhesus blood group system, a treatment which is estimated to have saved millions of lives.
