Yesterday, the Minister for Mental Health, Ingrid Stitt MP, launched two key documents outlining the next steps in reforming Victoria’s mental health system:
- The Next Phase of Reform: Mental Health and Wellbeing in Victoria
- Mental Health and Wellbeing Outcomes and Performance Framework
While we are still reviewing the details, it appears the Department may be recalibrating its approach to implementing the Royal Commission's recommendations. AMA Victoria has consistently advocated for reforms and timelines that address workforce needs and capabilities, and we are optimistic that these announcements reflect a more realistic and collaborative approach from the government.
Equally, we also welcome the Minister’s reaffirmation of the Victorian Government’s commitment to delivering all recommendations from the Royal Commission. The renewed focus on preventative and primary healthcare, alongside the emphasis on fostering a safe and supported workforce, aligns with AMA Victoria’s longstanding priorities.
Next week, AMA Victoria will meet with the Minister for Mental Health to reinforce our priorities and seek further clarity on the reform agenda.
