AMA Victoria is pleased to launch our 'Name A Place' drive, giving our members the chance to recognise and preserve the legacies of pioneering medical practitioners who have made significant contributions to healthcare. Figures like Dr Vera Scantlebury-Brown, previously honoured with a statue for her groundbreaking work in maternal and child health, have left a lasting impact on our healthcare system. These legacies deserve to be remembered and celebrated.
The Victorian Government is currently seeking public nominations to add to council name banks, with a focus on honouring under-represented groups, including women and First Nations people. This is a timely opportunity for AMA Victoria members to ensure that pioneering medical professionals are remembered when places are named in the future.
How you can participate
We encourage members to get involved in one of the following ways:
- Submit a nomination directly
You can directly nominate a deceased medical practitioner who has made a significant contribution to healthcare and has a connection to places or areas in Victoria. Nominations will be added to the relevant council's name bank and considered when new places are named across the state.
- How to nominate (please see Name a place in Victoria | Engage Victoria for full conditions):
- Select a medical practitioner whose contributions have had a significant impact.
- Ensure you have obtained consent/support from the family or next of kin, if applicable.
- Share your nominee’s details, biography, and information on relevant local connections with AMA Victoria, so we can support your nomination with a letter of endorsement if needed. Please send these details to Senior Policy Adviser, Lewis Horton, at [email protected].
- Submit your nomination online by 25 November 2024 at Name A Place - Victorian Government.
- Submit a nominee to AMA Victoria
If you prefer not to submit directly, we invite you to send a short biography of a notable medical practitioner to us. AMA Victoria will review all submissions and consider nominating selected individuals on behalf of our members. Please send such nominations to [email protected].
Recognising nominees
If you make a nomination, we encourage you to let us know. This will help us track our members' efforts and, where appropriate, provide additional support. We also plan to publish a list of nominated individuals in a future edition of VicDoc.
This initiative is an opportunity for us to collectively highlight the legacies of medical professionals who have shaped Victorian healthcare. We hope that members will consider participating by either submitting their own nominations or sending potential candidates to AMA Victoria for consideration.
